When I worked with a research forum event on campus, I realized research posters were an extremely complicated work of design, left up to scientists and students without design experience or resources to guide them. To help with this issue, I studied research posters, distilled them to their most essential elements, and identified some popular formats. I then designed 8 styles of posters, with 4 different layout options in each. Below is an example of one layout across the 8 styles.
